Michael G. Getty found peace on Thursday, May 29th, 2025 at his home in Minot, ND, following a four-month struggle after being diagnosed with lung cancer. He was not alone, but surrounded by his loved ones in his final moments.
Michael Guy Getty was born July 5th, 1950, to Guy and Eileen (Fink) Getty in Rapid City, SD. His parents fell in love with the Black Hills of South Dakota while visiting during their honeymoon, and it became the place where Michael would grow up and eventually graduate from Rapid City High School.
He attended South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, earning both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Geological Engineering. During this time, he met the woman who would become his wife and the mother of his children, Colleen (Baltzell) Venner. Together they raised their children, to whom Michael was a loving and dedicated father.
An engineer by trade, he worked for seven years with the State of South Dakota and another seventeen years at Minot Air Force Base as an Environmental Engineer, retiring in 2022.
Michael is survived by his sons Christopher M. Getty and wife Brittany M. (Beauregard) Getty of Mohall, ND, Sean W. Getty and wife Morgan C. (Kuntz) Getty of Sioux Falls, SD, and Conor P. S. Getty and wife Cassidy R. (Munn) Getty of Nashville, TN; daughter Caitlin E. Getty of Minot ND; and four grandchildren.
The loss of Michael Guy Getty will be deeply felt. He will be remembered as a caring and loving father and grandfather.
A private viewing will be held Saturday, June 7th, 2025, at St. Martin’s Chapel in Sturgis, SD, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am. Michael will be laid to rest at Bear Butte Cemetery, also in Sturgis, SD.
